We are looking for a Director of Engineering for a globally operating company in the consumer goods industry. The company employs more than 10.000 people in several business units, operates successfull in Europe and other continents.
The person reports to the Executive Board and is the “technical link” between the “headquarters” and the manufacturing units. The responsible board member has been with the company for some years and has broad experience in successful corporations and family businesses in the consumer goods industry.
The position works at all interfaces of the supply chain, in close contact with all plants and the other functional units of the business units. A colleague is responsible for the manufacturing sites including the engineering teams in each plant. High double-digit millions are currently being invested in some of the plants.
The role is a key position for future plant development and is of central importance for the future direction of the engineering/ technical teams. The position offers sufficient long-term challenges for a “Senior”, travel may vary from month to month, but is manageable; key project phases may also include absences for some days in EU or outside EU.
Responsible for:
- Plant development, projects and significant investments
- New developments and, if necessary, for the standardisation of plants
- Optimisation and use of greater vertical integration in the production areas
- Further development of master plans in collaboration with the plant managers
- Responsible for investments and works on the “machinery of the future”
- Collaborates with development and drives continuous standardisation.
- Always keeps an eye on the development of new supply chain solutions
The person we are looking for should have the necessary authenticity, aplomb and seniority and have already had technical responsibility for several technical teams. Ideally, he or she should have already been responsible for or production unit in addition to the technology, is not a must.
In many recruiting processes, strong emphasis is often placed on education, professional experience and knowledge. We would like to emphasise that we place previous success in a similar environment and the work and company culture very much at the centre of the recruiting process. We are looking for a person who ideally has a very good foundation in the first years of their career in key figure and process-orientated, internationally well-managed companies (or good bosses), ideally in consumer goods. We are looking for a person who understands the culture of pragmatic companies (here family-owned) and is ideally used to working in an international environment, who is more “down-to-earth” than “highly sophisticated” and wins the recognition of plant managers and managing directors.
For managers with a corporate background, the transition from a group to a family business is not always easy to manage, so relevant experience is a big plus, but not a must. In this case – due to important plants in Europe and outside EU – the international, down-to-earth “manufacturing flavour” is a big plus, as is experience in the food sector.
Requirements / Qualifications
- has been responsible for at least one professionally successful position in the field of technology / engineering for several years, ideally also in the field of production, not a must have
- has an affinity for technology, is down-to-earth rather than too strategic, international rather than too “conservative German”, experience in operation is a plus
- has knowledge in the areas of Lean, OE or Six Sigma
- high seniority, broad technical experience, good standing with plant management colleagues and management
- ideally has 10-15 years of professional experience, preferably more
- has a degree in engineering – ideally a technical apprenticeship – or a comparable qualification and is fluent in English
- is experienced in the field of engineering, utilities and maintenance or in extensive large technical projects, ideally in the food environment, investment volumes in high double-digit million range should not be a completely new challenge
- is positively communicative, authentic and emphatic – a popular figure in the supply chain with all stakeholders
- has a high proven customer orientation and acts pragmatically, creatively, analytically and solution-orientated
- can quickly familiarise himself with many issues and enjoys complexity and can “act” on it – in a structured and process-related manner
